Silicon Carbide Powder is a perfect tool for flattening and lapping synthetic and natural stones.

Take a pencil and put crosshatch pattern to the surface of the stone. Your goal is to get rid of crosshatch completely. If you notice left-over of pattern somewhere, it means geometry is not flat yet. Sprinkle some lapping powder onto a flat surface, this could be a tile or a piece of glass. Splash a small amount of water and start lapping your stones going in smooth even circles until the pencil marks are gone.

Alternative way to use the powder: if you have a ceramic whetstone flattener that is working very slowly, add a pinch of the powder to your stone, then use the ceramic flattener to flatten your stone. It will add some much needed cutting power to flatten your stone quickly.
