The brand Masakage takes inspiration from Masakage Yamagata, a skilled general known for his excellence in multiple disciplines of war, reflecting their knives’ all-around superior performance.

Concerned with the decline of Japanese blacksmithing due to aging artisans, Masakage was founded in 2007 by Takayuki Shibata, one of Japan’s best knife sharpeners. His aim was to help the Master Blacksmiths of Takefu Knife Village showcase their craftsmanship and to preserve and promote the craft. All Masakage knives are hand forged by various blacksmiths then hand sharpened by Shibata-san for an incredible cutting performance.

The Masakage Yuki is hand forged by Yoshimi Kato, a reknowned blacksmith from Takefu Knife Village. Named Yuki (meaning “snow”), the frosty Nashiji finish on the blade, combined with the white magnolia handle and red pakka wood ferrule, gives this knife an elegant and refined appearance.

The Yuki features White #2 carbon steel core, widely regarded as being the easiest steel to sharpen to a screaming sharp edge. Due to this fact, most sharpening videos feature a blade with White steel which helps showcase the sharpener's skill (when in reality the steel does a lot of heavy lifting). While White #2 has exceptional sharpness and above average edge retention, it comes with a major drawback - rusting. That's where the stainless cladding comes into play. While the cutting edge is White #2, it is sandwiched between 2 layers of stainless steel which as its name implies, is highly rust resistant. The end result is a knife that cuts exceptionally but with much less maintenance. Over time, the exposed White #2 edge will develop a patina which futher protects it from rust and adds a lot of character to the blade.

To maintain the Yuki’s performance, simply keep the blade dry after use to prevent rusting. If storing for long periods of time, apply a thin layer of oil to the blade after it is fully dried.
